Fashion Shoot

Live Through This

The ‘90s have made a definite comeback in street fashion. From the resurgence of Doc Martins and kitten heels to baby-doll dresses and crop tops, the revival is not only present in clothes, but in attitude. For many women, this time period reflected the height of third-wave feminism, prominently celebrated in the Riot Grrrl scene, where women celebrated their female identity, sexual independence and political prowess, expressed predominantly in the forms of independent media and music. Pioneers to the movement like lead singer Kathleen Hannah of Bikini Kill (and later Le Tigre) mixed punk rock with overt social awareness. Musicians such as PJ Harvey and Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth brought a strong female presence to the forefront of rock ‘n’ roll, setting the stage for later acts of lady rock stars. For this shoot, we celebrate the grrrl-power agenda of the early ‘90s, its leading ladies, and the exciting splash of forth wave seen today. —Lauria
